A little backstory to this clip before you watch it:
Will Smith’s father abandoned him and his mother when he was a child, and when Will was finally getting into show business and making a name for himself, he tried to sneak his way back into his life like nothing happened. Will co-wrote this episode, and James Avery (Uncle Phil) said “this scene was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to shoot in my life. Every emotion, every word.. that was Will”
Will was actually supposed to play it off and then walk away, and there was originally an alternate scene that was supposed to happen, but he actually completely cut out what was supposed to be said, and did all of his own dialogue. The hug at the end of this scene is completely genuine, and this was a stepping stone in Will’s career where he started to take on the “do what feels, sounds, and looks right” approach to his acting.
HERE COME THE TEARS
This is one of my favorite things on tumblr.
Careful the things you do—
Children will see, and learn.
I may snicker at Will Smith as a “rapper”, but I will always respect him as an artist. This had to be one of the most liberating moments for him as an actor— but more importantly, as a human being.
the tears…oh oh the tears…

Why I love Paul Rudd as Mike Hannigan.
Paul Rudd as Mike Hannigan is my favorite late season cast addition to any show…
Usually when a show is late in it’s life, a few seasons away from ending or being canceled, it’ll add actors to it’s cast list to try to boost ratings and add interest to the story line.
Like when the Brady’s little cousin Oliver came into the show.
Or when Eric Foreman left and they added Josh Meyers’ character Randy.
In my opinion, they usually strike out, and the show just isn’t as good.
But Mike Hannigan as Phoebe’s boyfriend and later husband was a perfect fit in the cast. He was like the friend we never knew we always wanted. The show was perfect without him, but with him, it was still perfect. Not better… it wasn’t some celebrity stunt to gain raitings…it was just a perfect addition to the family.
And that is why I love Paul Rudd as Mike Hannigan.
lol this is quite us
